dual booting

Anyone ever dual boot with Win2KPro?? I was wondering if I should do that instead of completely plunging into the dark side of Linux... but has anyone ever done it with the Win2KPro?

I'm wondering if there would be a problem?

any ideas?

TY

well.. before i got my new linux box, i was running both under the same box.. in a very mickey mouse setup... but it did work.

i had 2 hard drives in the win2k box.. and win2k was only installed on 1 hard drive. .. then, i unplugged 1 hard drive and installed linux on the other drive... (make sure you make a boot disk when you install linux.)

then, after i was all done, i re-hooked up both drives, and then when i wanted to run linux, i would put the linux boot disk in.. otherwise win2k would boot up.

not very scientifical, but it worked.. i don't know if this will work for every situation.. good luck. you are adventurous =)

mike that is a ghetto set up.

get a nice size HD. set it up with 2 partitions. install *nix on 1st partition then windows on 2nd partition. if you are installing redhat there are some options in there for setting up dual boot.

much better than the plug & unplug method, hehe.

The safest route is to use Partition Magic (or something similar). PM will move partitions, if necessary, to satisfy your different operating system requirements. Win2K wants to be on the primary partition (if I remember correctly). I haven't done Linux and Win2K Pro, but I have done Windows ME and Win2K Pro which, let me tell ya, sucks! Anyway, PM moved things around and everything worked fine.

As long as Win2K Pro is installed first, you will probably minimize your grief.

I personally have Windows installed on a 40GB drive on the master IDE controller on the mainboard, and linux installed on a seperate 40GB drive connected to a PCI ATA100 controller. I did it this way because I wanted more space and its just easier to have a drive for each OS, IMHO. Remember, I've been doing this awhile, I've BTDT. You can, of course have several OS installs on the same drive, but partition tables get corrupted, all sorts of weird things happen eventually. If you ever want anything to work the way it's supposed to, avoid Partition Magic like the plague. Just my opinion, your experience may vary.

At any rate, installing Win NT/2K/XP are easy alongside any of the newer linux distros. It used to be you had to go through the pain of bootstrapping Linux to its own partition, then creating an image of the boot information, copying that over to your NT drive, etc, etc. Now the newer versions of LILO and Grub can boot Win NT/2K/XP for you, so all you need to do is install Windows first, Linux second and let it boot the system for you. It's especially easy with Mandrake or Redhat, as they will normally automagically recognize your Windows install and do everything for you, but those distros may not be for you.

If you run into some trouble, post it to the Linux forum, we'll fix it.

I use VMWare to provide online classes for www.newhorizons.com I'm the Senior Systems Engineer worldwide for them. VMWare is a fantastic product. grab Workstation 3.0 and have a go at it. You might want to try Connectix VirtualPC too just so you can have a view of both.

There are trial versions available for both products.

Dual booting is a breeze if you let Lilo handle the chores, and if you have two Windows OS's and one of the is '98 or ME (9x) then you HAVE TO install the '9x OS first and let NT capture the boot sector. If you install 9x last it will grab the boot sector and never see the NT install again.
