DVD-ROM LAPTOP Hardware Issues

I just recently purchased an IBM Thinkpad 560X. This laptop came with a Teac DVE28E DVD-ROM drive. It came running Windows ME (I'm thinking why me), but I was going to put WIN2K on the system.

NOW....I just can't figure out how to get windows me to recognize the drive. The drivers are all correct, but the drive does not show up in My Computer. Furthermore it won't run any cd's. The light just sits there blinking...I don't understand.

I have also tried plugging my ZIP 250 USB drive into the computer and the light just blinks on that too. When I look in My Computer after plugging in the ZIP 250 drive I see the drive, but when I put a disk in and try to open it, it says "No Disk in Drive"

I have tried everything I know to do to get a different OS on this thing, but I can't seem to get anything to work. Any suggestions??

Sounds like missing chipset drivers, but you never mentioned if it was internal or external.

Its an external drive...Teac dve28e. I am still having the the same problems. I've pretty much tried everything...including updating the bios.

I called IBM and they want to charge me $35 for their "best effort". I can't see paying that..I will sell this thing first...I'm really thinking that is the best option anyway. It is becoming a real pain in the ass. The problem is..getting the money I had to invest into it back.

I'm almost positive its not the drive because my external ZIP 250 drive does the same thing. I know this works because I haveit hooked to my main pc.
