Windows 2000 Pro

Win2K Pro

Anyone out there have problems with this OS??

I like it except for all the bugs!

For instance...

My whole system will shut off... not just standby, but the whole computer turns OFF!

Sometimes I'll close everything, walk away, and when I come back the next day (or whenever) windows will have opened on their own... like windows explorer, Outlook Express, & Search... those are the ones that open on their own...

Does it sound more like a bug in the OS, or a virus?

Sometimes if I restart and don't type in my password, and come back later, there's something typed in where the password goes... but no one's touched it.

And it won't restart anymore... I have to hit the reset button... which I know isn't good for it, but it's the only way to "unstick" it. Otherwise it just hangs halfway with all the icons gone, but the wallpaper is still there. ctrl/alt/del doesn't work either.

Any ideas???

Bug or virus?

Now you know why I'm thinking of converting to Linux!!

I had the same problem

...
Well here are the answers I got

Webpage Help : Nothing
Forums : Either A my video Card is overheating or B it is something with my via chip
IRC: Either it is a bad copy of 2000 or It is something with a hardware issue ...

This also could be just a over use of a hardware peice IE Soundcard ...Video Card ...etc etc

I dunno alot about computers but I found myself formating my hda and installing win98se BUT then I got a really bad problem of Not being able to install Linux ...win98se really screwed with my comp and now I am no linux =[

i run win2k pro and have never had a problem :: knocking on wood :: it's the most stable o/s i've ever used.

my first guess for your problem would be some weird virus. i usually like to keep my systems pretty clean and re-format every 6-8 months.. when i feel that my system is getting cluttered.. there's nothing like a fresh install.

if you do a fresh install, make sure you download the latest win2k updates.. that might be part of the problem too.

good luck.

Thanks all... I was thinking it might be the video card overheating... I may put in fans first to see if that helps... if not, I'll have to reinstall... but I may just put Linux on instead...

Not sure yet... too lazy to try anything right now!! ha ha ha

Heh, sounds like a ghost...like maybe your mouse or keyboard keys are stuck.
Make sure you don't have Outlook Express or any other net app set to try to connect on its own periodically.

I haven't budged from win98se. I must have gotten a decent copy 'cos it's relatively problem free...until I get carried away with 10 open applications sucking up all my ram...that's when I get the blue screen of death.

Someone come install Linux and tutor me on it for an afternoon. I'll supply the pizza

well, i re-installed win2k last night.. everything went well. i really wish adobe made things like photoshop and premiere for linux.. if that were the case, i could probably make the switch.

perhaps now that osx is out, more developers can create programs to run off a unix platform.. and maybe oxs programs wouldn't be that hard to port over to linux... i dunno .. it would just be pretty cool.
