authenticated smtp server

if a windows smtp server requires authentication, .. does it require a domain name along with the user/pass? or just a user/pass?

just a really high level question here.

Usualy not, but if you are hosting virtuel domains on it, then you can set it up to require domain verification aswell.
What server are we talking about here ??

no server in peticular, .. just a question for a project that involves sending email using a windows smtp server which _may_ require authentication.

thanks.

Just as long as your connecting client is from an allowed IP or from an allowed user on the smtp server theres no need to parse a domain along with it.. I don't see why it should have been setup that way.
I'm guessing you're trying to send through the server an bypassing the relaying requirements in an automated way.
