ok here's the problem

this windows 98 box, will randomly, for whatever reason, stop being able to get online. All other boxes on the network can get online but it. The windows 98 box can ping other machines, but cannot see them in network neighbourhood
tried doign traceroute, stops at the ISP's router
can obtain a valid IP address from our DHCP server
can ping 127.0.0.1
cannot ping the windows 98 box form other machines
the windows 98 box is able to be seen in network neighbourhood, but gives "cannot be found" message when you try to access it

the ebst part is that it will randomly work and not work. no rhyme or reason
any thoughs?

Sounds like a possible faultly NIC, or a firewall going haywire. What does a 'ipconfig /all' show? Is the DHCP handing out the right info? You might try setting it statically just to see if it makes any difference.
