Windows' Strange Behaviour!

I'm persistently getting the error messages below. Can anyone help? I am on IE6 - with updates - and I've tried reinstalling Win98SE, nothing has helped nor has System File Checker...... I've has good trouble-free experiences in the past.
Quote:
IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff72843
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module RPCRT4.DLL at 0177:7fbbdbd1
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module SHELL32.DLL at 0177:7fcc5b9f
often happens when I right-click to rename a folder
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:01c810bb
Error has occurred in IE. IE will now close. If you continue to experience problems please restart your computer
often happens just because I right-click on a folder and usually follows on from the SHELL32 error message
The main problem I get kicks off when I sometimes right-click on a folder or hyperlink.

Did you wipe the drive when you reinstalled Windows, or did you just reinstall over the old copy? You might want to try the former.

Also, try the usual stuff. Get a virus scanner and use Spybot and Adaware to clean off any spyware.

I hear what you say. Yep, I'm using SpybotS&D, AVG Antivirus, ZoneAlarm, CrapCleaner, HijackThis, and all the usual stuff. Even replaced the offending files with SFC. One thing I can't do is wipe everthing clean - I've got my 1,000-page+ hobby website and a lot of irreplaceable stuff on board - so I can only reinstall Windows as an overlay (which I have done).

do you have another system you can mount that hard drive onto so you can backup that important information before you wipe the drive?

Unfortunately I've not got those facilities - and am not techny enough to deal with them. I am looking for a simple straightforward solution to be found in RegEdit and I'm sure there is one! But I do appreciate your trouble in replying. (Irksome though they are I can live with most of these problems for now - except for the big one when Desktop is wiped clean, no icons, no quick launch, no anything!)

Problem is that most people who are techy would just wipe the drive if we ever came across that sort of problem. Heck, playing OGM video files is a bit flaky and I'm thinking about wiping my computer clean again.

Can you invest in a second hard-drive? Just make it the primary drive and install Windows on it.

I do have a second HD, a Maxtor cannibalized from my first machine a while ago. It was D: and was used for reinstallation files and MP3s. Trouble is, the BIOS flipped and decided to switch C: and D: - I had to change the paths on over 1,000 files to make things start working again!

That's odd, the BIOS shouldn't do that. Your drives might be on "Cable Select", which let's the BIOS assign master/slave. If you manually assign master and slave, it shouldn't flip.

Since you have a second HD, move everything you need over to it, and wipe the primary clean.

It's not a slave, as I understand it the HDs are Primary (Samsung 10GB) and Secondary (Maxtor 5GB) and they were set up for me a long while ago as a disability prevents me from getting to physical grips with my machine. If I may further clarify - Windows/Program Files are still on the Samsung, which is the larger disc, but now the machine calls it D: instead of C: ! I am loathe to try to switch the drive letters again as, if it worked, it would mean me having to correct a lot of paths again and I would never know when or if the BIOS would decide to hiccup again in the future and take me back to square one. (Also because the BIOS has in the past screwed up my E: and F: CD drives.) I'm in a sort of "better the devil you know and not out of the frying pan into the fire" situation! To take this cliche-mangling a stage further I'm looking for a means of "not taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut"

Either way, can you move the files you need off the disk that has Windows installed and then wipe the drive?

I need all of them and although I could probably just about fit them on to the Maxtor disc (bearing in mind that a few Windows files won't permit copying) they would then be on the wrong disc so what would be the purpose of the exercise since it's not established that either HD is faulty.

You don't need to move all the files, just the important ones; text documents, bookmarks, saved games, whatever. You don't need to preserve everything.

You then format and install windows on the drive you just backed up, and you have a nice clean install of windows without any corrupt files getting in the way. You then reinstall yor desired applications, and move your saved files back from the other hard-drive.
