what are the specs? ( processor, memory and type, hard drive )

if something like that happened to me, i would probably quickly make a back-up of all my important documents, then just re-install the o/s.

windows me is notorious for being buggy, so if you possibly can, move up to windows xp.

if you do just re-install windows me, ... or if you upgrade to windows xp, make sure you boot from the cd, and delete your old partition when the menu comes up.

this will assure that your drive gets completely reformatted before it installs the new o/s.

i think my most important advice here is make a back-up while you still can

if a re-install of the o/s doesn't fix it, then it's most likely you have hardware issues. ( hard drive, or memory maybe )

this is all just guesses, and how i might troubleshoot my own system .. dont' take it as dead set on by any means.

Yeah, if I start having programs act oddly and I can't debug it to my satisfaction I just reinstall the OS.

My experience with "repair shops" is very negative. People who really know what they're doing - and unfortunately I'm not one of them - are pretty thin on the ground. Most times, when I've had the so-called experts tinker around with my machine it's ended up worse than before and I've had to spend time trying to undo what they've done!

I have WindowsME on one of my PCs. It's horrible. I've never seen a computer crash as much as that one does (although the actual PC itself is also to blame, if you install WindowsXP on it then it can't find the CD drive... it's weird... you install Windows from the CD drive which then promptly vanishes and crashes horribly if you try to re-install the drive) I took it back to the shop many times and tehy kept returning it in a 'fixed' state, but it was rarely much better.

Other than (or as well as) reformatting and reinstalling you should make sure you have all of the updates, patches etc. because ME really needs them.

Oh, the other thing, you say you've defragged. ME had a ridiculous bug in that meant it didn't work following a defrag. There's a patch on the MS website that fixes it. Why it was ever there to begin with is beyond comprehension.
