Messenger Spams

I have a firewall up, but sometimes I take it down for certain reasons. When I take it down, i get a little pop-up box ( not browser but a system box ) that advertises porn or software to buy to prevent these messenger spams.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these without buying and running some lame program?

don't tell me they sell programs to stop this..

go into dos a type:

Code:
net stop messenger
then for a more permanent solution, open up "admin tools->services" and disable "Messenger"

thanks a lot.

yes, there were several sites that sell software that does it =)

it's really strange, .. i've been running win2k pro for a couple years now and have never had that problem till recently. i guess it is because i just started using msn messenger.

It's just a new way to spam that wasn't used before, just turn off Messenger service.

have a look through your 'services' control panel and disable stuff that you don't need. 'messenger' and 'remote registry' are a couple of good ones. if you're on xp, you can save yourself 30 or more megs of ram by disabling alot of junk.
ex: if you don't use terminal services, turn it off.
if you don't need 'fast user switching', you'll really speed up your desktop when you disable it.
