Apache 2 and PHP 4.3

I have been tinkering with this for about a month now and I still can't get it running.

I have a source install of Apache 2.0.43 up and running and I have compiled PHP 4.3. I have followed the instructions on php.net to the letter and just about everyother site that offers installation instructions but I can't get the 2 to play together. When I hit a test PHP page it just askes me if I want to download the file!

This is not a production environment so I am not worried about security or stability I just wanted to see if I could get it up and running.

I have verified (numerous times) that mod_so.c is compiled in Apache for the life of me I can't figure out why this won't work. I got Apache 1.3.x and PHP 4.1.x running just fine from source.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What's your http.conf file look like? Did you make the necessary additions for .php file types?

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

I run the generic Apache 1.3.26 debian package that comes on stable, but I remember having a hard time with Apache 2 when it first came out. I gave up and stuck with the old version.

Just searching Google I found this page that might give you some help:

I also had problems with apache 2.x.x and PHP. A few friends told me that Pache 2+ and PHP were very difficult to install and didnt function well, so I dumped them and instaled Apache 1.x.x. I dont really know how that can help you...

Thanks for the link bdl, actully this is the first tutorial that I tried. Followed everything to the letter but I still couldn't get it to work. I am seriously considering dumping Apache 2 and going back to 1.3.x, I am tired of the headaches.

Thanks for the replies. I guess Apache 2 still isn't up to snuff yet. Well, maybe the server is but I would wait until the supporting programs (PHP, mod_Perl, etc...) mature to production releases.

I had to get Apache 2. and PHP 4.3 going on a windows box for a project and it was a pain in the a**. I ended up adding config files all over so windows knew where to look . I do have it running under windows now, but I don't look forward to having to do it again.

From everything I have been reading it doesn't sound like alot of people have had a real enjoyable time trying to install the two. This comes as a slight relief to me, reassuring me that I am not a total idiot.

I am pushing Apache down to 1.3.27 tonight or later this week. Hopefully it makes a difference.
