Real-Time streaming player

Hi,
I need some help on building a real-time player for Linux.
I need this player to read samples from a buffer and NOT from an audio file.
I need to find some commands in c/c++ for communicating with the sound card, keep it open all the time or an option to read data from a buffer.
If you can recommend me on a book\link\(c/c++) library or any thing that could help me on this project please let me know.

Thanks, ofer.

For opening and writign to the soundcard, just open /dev/dsp and write to that.

Reading from a buffer, well, then you'll need to know which buffer yuou want to read from.. if that's solved, just tab into it, and fetch whatever is stored in it.
