Need some guidance

OK, first of all let me tell you that I love trying to figure things out, and I have been trying to do some small things for my small lawn business. One thing is that most of the billing software out there does not have what I need, and I want to create a simple program that will allow me to add new clients, remove all ones and seperate pricing into categories.

Now I currently have open office to do all this, but for each category I have a sheet, I would love to figure out how to make a basic program, something like quickbooks (lite) but to be able to modify it to what I need. So here are my questions.

1. what programs do you recomend for me to use?
2. can one alter an existing program to your needs?

Like I said Im no programing wiz, hell am a beginner, but I love to figure out how to use programs, I have been reading and practicing with C++ and compiling but getting what I am looking for.

Thanks for your responses.

1. Which platform: Windows, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, QNX, etc. or independent?
2. Which framework or SDK? (MS, X, FLTK, KDE, Gnome, Q, etc. etc.)
3. Which RDBM? (Oracle, Firebird, MySQL innoDb, MS SQL, SQLight, Vista, etc.)

Before you want to create your own program you should understand the above

Note: Yes, Vista is a database, and it existed years before M$ stole the name for a new crappy OS

Vista is a database, from the orrigin and onwards, dont know why MS wanted to turn it into an OS
