PHP Extension Ideas in C

i'm learning how to write PHP extensions, .. but I don't know C that well. Any ideas on a good place to start getting my feet wet with C for this purpose?

i'm thinking maybe writting a PHP extension that adds more string functionality. i know there's got to be more fun things to work on though.

i was thinking of writing an x-10 extension so i could mess around with home automation with php, .. but i think that has already been done. i guess it would still be a learning experience to work with it .. but then again, i am a C n00b.

Have you looked at the descriptions out there ? (1; 2)
I havn't played around with it, but I think those two articles tells the basics, if it has something to do with programming C, then think Java and remove all the class relevant, and ask if you wound up with something that isn't working.

Btw Mike, a few pointers from my bookmarks: (1; 2; 3)

yeah, i think i've looked at every article on the web on the subject =) there's not a lot of info on the subject working with php5 so a lot of the artciles are dated.

i've learned a lot, especially since i am building on windows. there are a few more hoops to jump through to get everything to compile correctly, and most tutorials are written for *nix. even the ones ( as you linked to ) that are written for windows are lacking some major info for compiling php and custom extensions on windows.

it's fairly easy after you have all the information you need, .. it's just not all in one place.

i plan to write an article on how to make custom extensions and build on windows fairly soon, .. but now that i figured it out, i'm itching to write something useful.

i'm sure there's plenty of code examples in C on the net though.
