C/C++ compiler preferences

This is a curiosity post.
Just wondering what compilers and the like folk are using these days. I used to use Borland C++ 6.0 until my system fried (don't mess with memory in a dusty computer case), and I lost the CD to install it on my new unit. Now I'm trying to fiddle with DevC++5.
So... What's in your system?

Not that I develop C/C++, but I always have GCC around.

Oops! I just realized that I have DevC++4, not DevC++5.

gcc is by far the most popular compiler out there (by number of installations).

i currently have visual studio, gcc for 4 platforms (cygwin, linux-x86, arm, mips), and texas instruments code composer studio (for arm and t.i. dsps)

How does the functionality of gcc compare to Borland and DEVC++? I have yet to try gcc, but many have steered me away from it. Any idea why, or is it just a preference thing VS ability?

DevC++ is an IDE, not a compiler. the compiler it uses is a version of gcc.

Hmm. I wonder if I'm thinking of the same gcc... Do you know what "GCC" stands for, what the letters mean?
