Learning C++

I've been looking into learning C++ recently, and it looks like the sort of language where a book is absolutely necessary. Can anyone reccomend a good book to learn from? Thanks,

C++ A Beginners Guide by Herbert Schildt seems to be very good.

whatever you do, stay away from the Deitel&Deitel book. seriously, it is terrible. i think i'm gonna go write an amazon review right now warning people to stay away from it.

the abovementioned Schildt writes very good instructional books.

I didn't find it that bad, I would maybe if you have no prior coding experiance in which case you shouldn't be learning C++ yet anyway.

Accelerated C++ by Andrew Koenig is really good for learning C++ (assuming you've done some programming in the past). Stroustrup is better as a reference, I think, than as a tutorial introduction.

I tend to agree with inkedmn.

I have to go with Bruin..stay away from Deitel&Deitel.. I had one of their books for an advanced Java programming class and it was a complete waste of money...we dropped it about 2 weeks into the course....
Go with anything from O'Reilly... Jessy Liberty is pretty good when he stays on track......

You needed a class to learn Java? Anyway those authors both went to MIT, their coding style might be different then your used to be their not horrible writers or coders for that matter. For reviews of their books just check amazon getting reviews there would be the same as getting reviews here.

Deitel and Deitel books are generally crap, I don't care where they went to school. And just because you're good at programming doesn't mean you're adept at teaching others to program.

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with taking programming classes. I've taken them. I even took a Java class. Did i have to take it to learn the language? No, not really. Do i take offense at people who give newer programmers crap for trying to learn? You bet.

It wasn't an insult it was simply a question so don't start making assumptions. 2ndly I was just pointing out that their are many who would disagree with your opinion. Do I take offense to ppl on msg boards who like to jump to unjust conclusions just so they can falme? you bet.

If it was just a question, why would you ask it if he answered you in the previous post (other than as a jab)? And besides, the obvious implication of your question was that a class shouldn't be needed to learn Java, so feigning innocence is hopeless.

I don't mean to pick a fight, maybe it's just my mood today, but saying "You needed a class to learn Java?" is insulting, without a doubt, since there's really no situation I can think of where it wouldn't be offensive.

No hard feelings, I just think that if there's one place a programmer should be able to ask an honest question without fear of condescending response, it should be a place like this.

I wasn't making an assumption...I was just responding to your assumption that I needed to take a class to learn Java. I had been using Java befor I took the class... as a mater of fact I beta tested the class, it was advanced Java programming and I needed it as a requirement for my programming.
We get alot of students on this board, so don't start ragging on some one who "taking a class" to learn a programming language. I am working on C#.Net now and if I had the time and the money I would take a class for it too, to get a good running start at it.

Ok I will say this again, I WASN'T CONDEMINGANYONE FOR TAKING A CLASS. It was a question to verify I understood the post correctly that it was a class on JAVA and not a mistake with him meaning another language or the fact that he was just taking an advanced class.. "It wasn't an insult it was simply a question so don't start making assumptions. 2ndly I was just pointing out that their are many who would disagree with your opinion. Do I take offense to ppl on msg boards who like to jump to unjust conclusions just so they can falme? you bet." that was a post directed at inkedmn not
DesertWolf which I thought was obvious. If I confused ppl I am sorry but please read my post and concider it instead of dismissing it totally.

furthermore his answer to my question is not yes so therefore my question was a valid 1 as he did not have to take a class to learn java, there was no assumption on my part as it was a question.
