compile in redhat

i'm working on this redhat box and gcc isn't installed. is there some other compiler or way to compile c++ native to redhat? or is gcc it.

there are several c++ compilers for linux. however, since linux was built on gcc, you'll find that it is the best supported one. the kernel and most of the binaries are probably built with it.
you can go out there and download your own (tendra's tcc, intel's icc, borland (?), etc) if you feel like it.

if you are root, it would be best to install gcc from the original CD (in RPM form) or maybe you can get a later version from RedHat's website.. I would strongly suggest using the version from the original CD though because newer version maybe compiled for a newer version of the GNU Libc library (glibc) which could cause problems.

if you aren't root see if you can ask the admin/root superuser if he can install gcc for you or give you permission to use gcc.
