Angry Bloody Windows IE rendering

Hello i have been working on hand coding some HTML and CSS everything looks okay and the code passes validation but I have two problems when my pages are veiwed under IE in windows (not mac) and Netscape 4.x. Okay Netscape i am not worried about and in general I really am not that concerened about the rendering problems in Windows, except that these pages are not just for Linux users. There will eventually be content intended for everyone.

Anyway the problems:

#1 the fonts on:

sarah31.ca

display larger than intended and are not nice and smooth like they are on all other browsers (that have css capabilities).

#2 the backgrounds behind the images on the new portal page i am creating:

future portal page

are not the same colour as the intended background colour despite the images having transparent backgrounds.

All browsers except netscape 4.xx and Windows IE "see" this transparency and render properly, even the browsers without css capabilities!

For the second problem i guess i could transfer the images to the appropriate coloured back ground but I haven figured out how to tell gimp I want a specific hex colour.

Hmmm... can you give me some specifics?? Give me a link to the page you're talking about and which words are in the wrong size and what do you want them to be??

Then I'll take a look and see if I can see anything that might help...

actually with both sites in the first post all of the text is rendered at least 4pt higher maybe more. For example the text in the <p> sections on both pages has been designated by the css to be 10pt but looks to be at least 14 in ie and the topic boxes on the second site varies in size depending on whichbrowser you use and regardless of if I specify a differnt font size.

(of course the style sheet file names are in the html source just add http://www.sarah31.ca/ and you can view the css files)

personally i would assume (because of the wide variance in rendering) this is just a result of the complete lack of browser standards. The absolute best browser for displaying the sites as they are coded is the most recent version of mozilla

(actually i am not that worried about the font display as much as i was the image transparency problem)

i don't know if this will help.. and it kinda defeats the purpose of having css... but try using a font tag before the area of text in question.. just assign a size attribute to it and see if that makes a difference. ie:

<p class=whatever><font size=2> text here </font></p>

just a thought

So, are you still having problems? Or did you figure it out? Let us know... maybe we can come up with some more ideas.

well the font problem on the current portal page i am not even gonna worry about. Oddly a win2k box i was on this weekend rendered it okay though a little large. The font display size with the future portal is not as ugly so i am not worried about that.

As for the image trouble-- i transferred the iamges to a background with exactly the same hex code and all browsers except Opera and amaya do not display differing background colours (odd since they are exactly the same colour orange).
