PHP Based CMS and Modules

This is only partly a PHP question. Does anyone have any experience creating custom modules for any of the PHP based content management systems? I'm looking at building a departmental intranet site. Rather than starting from scratch, I'm thinking that a CMS with a custom module would satisfy all of my requirements and potentially be faster to get up and running.

One of the things that I've noticed so far is that while a number of open source CMSes support module development, the quality, quantity, and availability of documentation varies.

I would be interested in comments on ease of coding, tie-ins to other modules like role-based security for example, etc.

We build customised cms modules for each web site we do. As you can imagine, the modues by their nature are easy to integrate and customise

Thanks for the thought, Sonia. Since posting this I have made the decision to use Drupal for the site. It's working out well. I've found that while I ultimately want a custom reporting module, I can do without it for the initial pass.

I just finished a basic, but functional reporting function that meets most of my custom needs. I'm liking Drupal a lot. Of course the eyes do wander from time to time. I just came across an interesting couple of articles on the CakePHP framework. They admit to being a Ruby on Rails ripoff implemented in PHP. Since I've never used Ruby on Rails, it's all new to me. I might be able to use it for some simple admin functionality that I need.

I've torn apart Etomite pretty much down to it's core and built it back up again. Only major drawback is the lack of real "users" - I grafted it in by using Apache's mechanism for it. But it's a great CMS if all you want is simple content management.
