Compiling PHP5 on Windows

Has anyone successfully compiled PHP5 on Windows? I get fatal errors and the output doesn't even seem very useful.

Here's the last few lines:
Code:
safe_mode.c
snprintf.c
spprintf.c
strlcat.c
strlcpy.c
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: '"cl.exe"' : return code '0x2'
Stop.
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: '"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\
VC7\BIN\nmake.exe"' : return code '0x2'
Stop.
any tips on setting up a build environment? i got the configure script happening, it just will always fail when i try to build. =/

I like to use the cygwin unix compatibility layer with gcc when on windows. But then again I use linux daily so maybe I'm Unix biased.

i have that installed. are you saying i can just throw the source in c:\cygwin\usr\src, and just do a regular ./configure make make install ?

I don't think it has to go in /usr/src , but if you have the cygwin executables in your path, you should be able to cd to the directory with the source code for php5 and execute GNU make (rather than nmake).

Yeah exactly what you said, in your last sentence.
