Unhappy err... I'm new

Hi all I am bran new to mysql and PHP
and have been having problems setting everything up -
currently I can not do the following

To set a root password for MySQL, type the following command in the bin directory
of your MySQL installation (include the quotes):

mysqladmin -u root password "your new password"

To make sure MySQL has registered this change, you should tell it to reload its
list of authorized users and passwords:
mysqladmin -u root reload
If this command returns an error message to tell you that access was denied, don't
worry: this just means the password has already taken effect.
To try out your new password, request that the MySQL server tell you its current
status:
mysqladmin -u root -p status

I am using the cmd mysql in the \bin directory and when I hit return nothing happens.
sorry for the stupid question but what do I need to do?

I would speculate that you haven't actually started mysqld or haven't installed MySQL properly. Can you be specific as to what led you to this point? In other words, how did you go about installing MySQL, what platform are you using (Windows / UNIX) etc.

I am on winXP pro - the service I have running shows that mysqld-nt.exe is running but I did have issues with the installation as I could not get the libmysql.dll to register without copying it and placing it in the bin directory...
not sure if that could be a problem

i think bdl may be right. go into c:\mysql\bin and double click winmysqladmin.exe

i think that should start mysql as a service.

then, you can try to login to mysql as you have before.

note that c:\mysql may be a different directory in your system .. i mean wherever you installed mysql.
