Multi Byte Characters with PHP/MySQL

I'm working on a project which will be using both English and Japanese character sets.

Does anyone have any experience in storring Japanese characters in MySQL?

I'm in the very early stages of the project and currently have no way to test with the Japanese characters.

Also, what about PHP? Do the string functions in PHP work fine with the char set?
