Capturing a user defined function

How do I capture a function f(x) from a user and evaluate a result? Say the function they enter is f(x) = x + 2? How would I capture that? Or maybe something more complex like f(x) = x ^ 2 + (e^2 + 5).

If the user is giving you strings of text, you'll have to parse that text into code and evaluate that.
