Question Recommended router

Hi all,

I finally got two machines at my house (Windows 2000 and a Red Hat box) and I was wondering, what type of router do you guys recommened getting that will let me share an internet connection and files?

I just want something simple, maybe a four port router, that will hopefully work on the Linux box.

I found a really cheap one on the Circuit City website for $29.99, the link is:
Siemens Speed Stream 4 Port Router

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah. I had one of those until I bought my first wireless setup the other day, a Linksys BEFW11S4 and the Linksys is faster in wireless mode than the D-Link is wired. For whatever reason, that D-Link is much slower than any router / firewall I've used to date. I didn't realize how much slower until I hooked up the Linksys (my first Linksys product, I should mention). I'm not saying get a wireless setup, but spend a little extra money to get a better product, it's well worth it.

I had problems with Linksys and *NIX systems protocols. D-Link I had no trouble at all. Plus you have ingress and egress filters you can set. Myabe the DI-704 is something you might look at?

Ya. I have a D-Link 7** that I love! I used to have a linksys and it was slower than my D-Link. Also, with D-Link (cant remember with Linksys) I could have a built-in software for access control. I can open any port I want, allow only certain people in, and set all my net options. With the D-Link, I also had NO problems switching from Windows to Linux. I had no trouble in Linux and my network. I would recommend a D-Link.

Ilya.

Re: Which Router?

I have been using a Linksys Wireless 4-port router, attached to my cable modem for about a year. I run one windows machine, some Linux machines and a few Sun Solaris boxes. I have had not problem what-so-ever with the router. Before that I used a Netgear 4-port router (cabled) and that was also pretty good. I would recomend either depending on how you go.

Regards,

jlk
