Hi Melvin, and welcome here at CodeNewbie.

Regarding your chosen handle. It's your online identity, no need to follow peoples advise towards what you want to be named...
Personaly I kinda like "melvin" it has a nice ring to it.. If our maskot here wasn't already named stan, I would have prefered it as melvin (don't know if Mike would agree on that)
Or perhaps my drawing towards the name lies in the fact that it's a common lable for moderators, aswell as Ted or Bill is for sysadmins.

If your confusion towards what your handle should be, is due to trying to fit in or to gain respect in the online community, then you're way off. You don't become what your handle is, you define what your handle should be...

Let me ask you this, wouldn't it be more appropriate 5 years from now, to know that melvin is this well known bad a** programmer, who eat Prolog for breakfast and gusshes it down with galons of brainf*ck befor finishing off with a nice bowl of Pascal. Instead of ruber or snaked or zo9...
Take a moment and think about it, now isn't the name melvin a more likeable name for someone you can identify yourself with, when refering to the previus caracter ??

The ones you've suggested kinda reminds me of some 14 year old script kiddie, trying to sound far too advanced than their current situation.

Sorry if that last remark offened anyone...

Anyway, I'm just babling on and on and could probably continue all morning on this subject. Instead I will let you ponder on your current situation and welcome you here at CodeNewbie, where I'm sure we can fullfill your every needs.

By the way, using the name marvin wouldn't be a bad choice aswell....

Send a message via AIM to teknomage1
were I to register again, I'd probably go by Fred (my real name).

Very much so - Melvin is a far superior name. But if you really wanted a "hacker" sounding name, choose something from classic cyber-punk SciFi (I've always thought the names from Neuromancer would make great handles). It's all about the cool esoteric references. Heck, my Unix ID, whenever I have the choice, is 2501.

Melvin sounds good to me. I have a brother-in-law with that name. I keep my strange sounding handle because 1) I use it on a number of sites and I'm getting too old to remember different handles and 2) I proposed the name years ago for a scifi writers' group and it got shot down for something REALLY stupid sounding.

Everyone is stuck to their name, but if i didn't choose this nick 14 years ago, i would have used something like "OnThe7thDay..."
Cos with my knowledge of today this would be better
