Stop.
In detail:
You've got a long way to go before that comes close to being a reasonable goal. The Linux guys have been at it for years and, for workstations, they're nowhere near MS or Apple (and Apple isn't anywhere near MS for workstation performance). It wasn't even a viable workstation platform until recently (non-preemptable scheduling = utter crap for desktops/workstations).
I'd worry about fixing things like a sticky '1' key causing multiple exclamation points as well as successfully mastering proper use of the word "you".
Once you get to university, you'll likely either change your goals or realize their depth.

Damn that was harsh Ass. Seriously, if you have dreams of being a computer programmer, why wait until College?
Check out the course MIT makes their undergrads take as an intro to programming - http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/

Not that you can't do it, but it's generally done wrong.
As someone who taught the Unix/C/First Stage Compilers class as a TA, I can safely say there's enough misinformation on the internet to hinder both the students and the teachers.
I didn't wait until university, and I'm not saying everyone should, but don't make the mistake of not learning the fundamentals or why something works the way it does and jumping right into saying dumb crap like "I can program Visual C++" or "I'm a C++ expert" or "C++ is so much better than C" or ... well the list is endless. Just head over to gamedev.net's forums for plenty of examples.

I had originally responded when the entirety of your comment was "Stop." That being said, often implementing something yourself is a way to learn the fundamentals of something, though it has major crash-n-burn potential. It seems to me everyone should be encouraged to try things though.

Fun advice then:
Linux still isn't user friendly: it's for geeks only.
1) Make it friendly.
2) Make a better (sharper) font rendering system.
That'll keep you busy for a while.
In the mean time, make sure you have dreams left. What else is there to do when all your dreams came true?

I like the idea of somebody becoming better then Microsoft. But I don't think that person should be you... because of your evil laugh...
An evil laugh is not a good sign

With a team of developers it would take that much time to get better then Microsoft.
On your own i have no clue, but think about the GNU Linux kernel and how much time Linus Torvalds spent on that.
