Replace News with RSS /. News?

What do you guys think? Our news area isn't updated that much and Slash Dot has so much new information everyday, .. do you think I should replace our current front page news with Slash Dot Feeds?

hmm..... can it be done in a pattern which will conform with the current design of the site ?
Since the initial thought, where people would be able to comment in the news section, isn't beeing used that much.. I guess we could make it /. news and link to the /. thread instead.. But I do feel it has to merge with teh current design of this site..

My first reaction is no, but I guess it doesn't matter much in the scheme of things. I reacted no because I generally don't consider codenewbie a news source, so having frequently updated news wouldn't be a priority for me. I frequent slashdot, news.com, and others (when I'm supposed to be working). I come to codenewbie to see if I can help out on something or to post the occasional question of my own.

it's just kind of stagnant, .. not much changes on the front page .. i don't have time to post news everyday, .. and i bet most regulars don't even look there.

i agree it's not a news source, but the home page has news .. so where should it come from? maybe at a later time we can have more participation and have fresh consistantly updated news, but atm it's not working like that.

red: it would be easy to make it look the same by using something like Magpie.

i could put up 5 articles from multiple sources too. maybe split the page in half and do away with the blog.

just trying to figure out a way to make te home page more useful.

any other ideas?

hmm... when you think about it, this is codenewbie, not "here is your news for nerds" forum, if we were to provide news on the frontpage, I would rather go with it beeing programming/coding related news.. (with the occationaly nerdy stuff) not featuring every item from /. for that theres /. and people know it exist.

I would rather do a complete change of the frontpage, and have it showing some information regarding codenewbie, like the latest 10 started threads, or for us regulars the 10 latest replies to threads, I know I love that feature from other forums I attend to.
It could be spiced up with the latest blogs and some statistics, like the top 10 posters determined on their average post per day, statistics of visitors from google what their search terms were to send them here, statistics on threads viewed the most, posted the most etc..

Giving it more a use for this forums users instead of just an eye catcher..

I know we used to have alot of this previusly, but as far as I recall we never did any further investigation on gathering all the info and making it all available on the frontpage..
Mike, I think you get my thoughts from this description, eventho it was rather mangled together.

Note: Only requirement I have, is that it isn't as filled like the stuff on www.tinyminds.org, since I find that frontpage too stuffed and heavy.

Maybe agregate Slashdot's Developer and IT sections along with the feeds from say Lambda the Ultimate and OldNewThing? Maybe also add some Artima stuff for flavor.

I agree, it shouldn't just be Slashdot, I can just go to Slashdot for that. Maybe make a mix of feeds, even intermingle them possibly. But keep it light, you can easily over load the page with too many feeds.

Maybe pull the latest posts and blogs. I usually head for the forum when I first get here anyway, linking the newest posts on the main page would make me stop and look at it for sure.
