HP and Carly

I'm not too much of an HP follower, but I had known the reputation that Carly Fiorina, so I wasn't too surprised to see some rejoicing at her being fired from HP. As the day went on, however, the amount of rejoicing ("Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead," was the most common phrase used) kinda suprised me. But in retrospect, I can see it. HP personal computers are junk, I hate the Pavilion with a passion. I heard they sunk a good deal resources into the Itantic, and what the hell were they thinking with that Compaq merger? That they were going to become a lean, mean PC machine? I don't know the first thing about running a business, and I could see that was going to be a mess.

Then came the stories about what she did to the calculator division, how that merger completely destroyed company morale, how she gutted the various divisions following the merger, and yeah, I can see how people really hated her. At one point, HP's stock was up 11 percent after news of her firing. Guess it's hard to argue with that.

I was listening to the report on the way to work this morning on NPR. I don't know much about her or her legacy, but I do know that I don't think of 'great PCs' when I think of HP. I more think of computer printers for some reason.
