PC suggestions please!!

hi everyone,

a friend of mine is looking to buy a PC... he is not looking for something spectacular... his budget is something around AU$1000

he will mostly be using it to watch movies and play some games (not the ones that require high end configs) and run some accounting packages for doing his uni work....

any suggestions??

Generally I suggest that people go to a local computer shop that has a good reputation and have them build one. That way you get brand-name parts that you can find drivers and support for in the future.

But, barring that, it sounds like a perfect case for getting a low-end machine from Dell.

Dude, your gettin a Dell!

Seriously, we have had luck with Dell for our servers, laptops & desktops. The only thing that sucks is you have to call India tech support to resolve any desktop hardware problems...

i am sorry i should have said this before, i already checked out dell australia... my frnd didnt like it....

There is one thing i must say here... and bear in my mind that i have dell too.. and i love it...
but dell does restrict you some times ... i mean some of it customisation options are not great.. for example... even if you have a licensed copy of a OS you stil have to buy a new one...

he is just looking for something that would get him by till he finishes his studies...and i dont think that a PIV will fit into his budget

Unless you're upgrading to XP Pro, the cost of the OS is nominal (Dell pays next to nothing for the OS).

Problem is that for the most part people here will only have dealt with Dell or HP or some large company because we A) Make our own computers B) if we deal with pre-built stuff it's likely a result of a job as system administrators, so it's either servers or a large-scale rollout, which is the domain of the large companies.

You can look at the other major players; HP/Compaq, Gateway, eMachines, Sony . . . I think IBM still sells PCs (at least for a little while longer).

You can get an N series with no operating system. A decent one will run about $500 the equilivent with XP would be $150 more.
