PCI Compatability

I was doing some window shopping, and realized that over the past few years there'd been a bit of a revolution in the PCI slot. The old PCI 32-bit/33 MHz we'd all grown to know and love was rapidly going away, replaced by PCI 2.2, PCI-X, PCI-X 2.0, PCIe. Anyone know exactly how compatable these various PCI slots are? I've noticed a lot of controller cards are available in the PCI 2.2 variety, but that motherboards are more intereste in PCI-X or PCIe (the latter being usually an AGP replacement as opposed to a PCI replacement).
