Thanks sde, really great of you.
But I am not back yet. Mererly using the connection of a friend.

I have my connections ready but Tiscali didn't send me the ip's. They seem to do that 3 days later or so.

I have decided to take 2mb sdsl and one luxury adsl (3mb / 640 kb).
Two connections yes, but I can't afford my initial idea (one major connection).

Anyways, I expect to be online next monday early usa time.

Thanks again for welcoming me back.

Hey, the adsl works now.
Webspace is not active yet.
Well, at least this one is operational kinda.

I'm back.

hi valmont .. where in the netherlands do you live .. why did you chose for the adsl that you chose for ?

i am living in alkmaar and will switch to adsl soon

(i do some online gaming : muds & diablo2 & runescape, visit a lot of boards, and download quite some as well (also using kazaa lite once in a while) ... i would like to have no limits .. but not sure if the limits will affact me in any way .. never tracked my own usage for real )

First of all I wanted a different hi-speed connection but I could not afford it so I decided to take one sdsl con and one fast adsl con.

The adsl is from Tiscali and I have the "ADSL Live!" version (3mb down/640kb up). It costs 50 eur a month. Waiting time about 1.5 weeks. 30 eur for a adsl modem if you haven't got one yet. No other costs at the moment.
So:
Tiscali ADSL Live! = 50 p/m ( You will get 50 Mb webspace).
Modem = 30 (one time)
Limit = 20 Gb.

You can calculate on what you need:
- Know what you download (kazaa, huge gaming mods etc.).
- Gaming is about 80 Mb p/hour.
- Simple surfing about 10 Mb p/hour.

I have chosen for this adsl connection because it is the fastest of all adsl connections in our country but it is cheaper then the fastest connections of other companies.

Basically you would like to choose for Tiscali if you want the fastest of all vs a reasonable price. You also get the most webspace from Tiscali (50 vs 30/35 from others).
Otherwise it really doesn't matter what you take. It seems that Tiscali's slower connections are relatively more expensive (by 5 eur or so).

I live in Nijmegen.
I hope this answers your question(s), otherwise do ask.

thanks!

that helped a lot .. especially the 10/80 mb/h

i know some more people using tiscali .. havent heard a bad thing about them .. but neither did i hear anything bad about the other providers

did you have cable internet as well ?

i never heard of dsdl .. whats the difference between that and asdl ?

you said me to ask more question . so there you go

SDSL is NON-blocked bandwith. So the the bandwith is totally mine and therefore much faster then adsl. Furthermore sdsl-upload is the same as it's download (SYMETRIC DSL = SDSL). A= Asymetric (upload is not same as download).

But basically SDSL is much faster. Obviously it has a different price tag as well.
My SDSL is from Tiscali as well so you can guess what it is (400 eur p/m).

400 p/m ? wow! .. ok i will stick with asdl

have you ever used cable ? can you compare asdl with cable ?

the only thing i know is that in crowded cities cable can be slower because you have to share your bandwidth .. where with asdl the bandwidth is yours ?

asdl has a garanteed speed .. cable offers a max speed ?

in the country side cable might be faster

i think alkmaar can be compared to nijmegen ... hmm maybe a bit smaller

If many poeple in your street use cable then the speed goes down, yes. Such is not the case with adsl.

Cable in the Netherlands was usually faster then adsl (both upload and download), unless you choose a high-speed adsl connection. In the latter case, you would have payed about 80 eur, wich is a lot.

When Tiscali came around (took over WorldOnline remember?) they started a formal procedure (at the OPTA, the "inspector" of phone companies) so that they could implement their own network (BabyXL) without interference of KPN (who owns all the major ADSL-providers as daughters). Tiscali won that procedure obviously.

More on that procedure:
It was clear that the claimer would always be granted permission to build their own network (formality) and decide their own speeds. But no one did start such a procedure since almost everything was (is) ownded by KPN. Keeps the price up and the speeds down -low(er) investment.
Now that Tiscali did this formality everybody else did the same. You can see the comercials on the TV now.
Prices are lower and adsl speeds are higher.

Cable vs ADSL:
Basically any ADSL connection over 30 eur is faster then our cable. Cable has a good name because it was the first affordable high-bandwith internet. But almost every ISP has upgraded their ADSL speeds so cable is running behind in that sence. But then again, the price of cable remains the same while the price of (luxury) adsl-connections did rise a bit. But it's for me definatly worth it.

I downloaded yesterday with a speed of 490 KiloBytes/sec and uploaded with a speed of 75 KiloBytes/s. There is no cable in the world who can do that but you obviously pay twice the price of cable. You might not need this. A slower adsl-class is still faster then cable. Check for the prices and speeds on the internet.

ok thanks

my colleague lives 2 streets away from me and has asdl via planet (dont know which version) ... his speed is a bit higher than our cable ...

he is paying a bit more as well though .. we are paying slightly less than 50eu while he is paying a bit more than 50eu p/m

i will definetly get asdl when i (finally) get my own house ... but i dont know about my parents .. they dont want to pay per minute .. use it quite often .. but not that heavy .. cable is cheaper right now . but offers very little (alkmaar has 1 cable provider, it moved from multiweb to multicable to quicknet to sonera to chello ... in only a few years .. the price did rise .. the extras did drop . less webspace .. only 1 email address .. less service ... bit better speed though) .. they dont want to pay more than they are doing right though .. i will have a look at the lower speed asdls for them ..

thanks for all the info .. especially the amount of bandwidth used approximately .. helps a lot with deciding
