How do you pronounce CHMOD, CHGRP and CHOWN?
I guess everyone has their own way. I say "c-h-mod", pronouncing the C and the H and mod rhyming with 'god', and "c-h-group". But I don't want to sound like an idiot so I was just wondering if this is right.
On CHOWN I have no idea.

i was actually thinking of the way to say linux yesterday.
most people say it the way i do, .. with a 'short i' ( like 'lick' ) , .. but then there's the people who make the first sylable rhyme with linus ( like 'line' )
how does everyone else pronounce it?

C+H+MOD
C+H+OWN
C+H+GRouP
i dont like it when people say "CHOWN" or "CHMOD"...
what bothers me is when someone says "ETC" (etsee) rather than "E+T+C"

Well, Admin, I guess I'd annoy the crap out of you.
I normally say 'chmod' like 'shmod', which is like the beginning of 'shoe.' I say 'etc' like it was the acronym, so its 'etcetera'. I don't have to say chgrp or chown much, so I'm not quite sure how I'd say them. I figure I'd just change it everytime anyway. I say linux with the short 'i' as well.
I guess that's kind of weird that I wouldn't know how I'd say some of the things since I mostly use linux anyway. Even as the admin of a lab I don't have to say it much to people. Hrm...thats weird.

I use the short 'i' when saying linux. It seems to roll off the tongue easier than using the long 'i'. Plus, I think that's the more common pronunciation.

Hmm. I've always said 'change mod', 'change own', 'change group'.

I say them all like they are words. CHMOD = "Chuh'mod" (Short "o" in "off," not like "own")
I also pronounce the acronym "ETC" as the entire word "et cetera." (Originated from Latin; "et" meaning "and," and "cetera" meaning "the rest.")

Wow, judging by all the different responses, I guess there's really no standard way of saying those words. That's cool, then. I'll just keep doing it the way I was.
