banner ads? =)
that's probably how you found this place. most of the traffic here is generated by search engines and banner ads.
banner ads generate a lot of traffic, but it can get pricey for sure.

well it really depends on what type of site you run.
what i do is find sites that someone who may be interested in my site would go visit... a popular site. most likely if that site gets any significant amount of traffic, they will offer some advertising program.
if the site has banners on it, look around for a link that says "advertise with us" or something like that. it's a little like playing 'where's waldo' sometimes, but you will find it.

The best advertisement is word of mouth, tell everyone you know that is interested in the sites topic, by doing this if the site is any good they will tell ppl and the cycle will continue.
It also helps to do something unique which will draw attention.
Most of all optimize your site for Google, it would help to read "Google Hacks" by oreilly.

Same with me. I came through a banner ad (forgot from where). Banners can be effective if 1) You have a good place to put them, and 2) If you have some capital.
Personally, I am going to spread my website via word of mouth. All the great sites work that way...

SEO is a great way to bring in some traffic. I would recommend NOT using tricks to get your page ranked higher. That can result in your site being banned from the engines.
Page titles, descriptions, URIs, keyword density, alt tags, etc... Those will all help bring in traffic...

the one day i placed a link to this site in my slashdot signature (in a highly rated comment), there were more users on the forum than ever before or since. see new record, part 2 and compare to "Most users ever online".
you guys weren't smart enough to look at the refer logs back then.

Just to make myself clear, I wasn't talking about using tricks to get your page ranked higher just knowing what google does and does not like to index, using Robots.txt and not using sid's stuff like that.

oh comon joe .. you're making an assumption
we keep referer logs from last year, .. but without looking at them i can tell you exactly what we were doing. the same thing i'm doing now with banners .. except on a little bigger budget.
we were advertising on distrowatch, fark, tinyminds, and sa all at the same time. we only did it for 2 months straight.
this time i tried linuxiso, but the problem with that is the 150k impressions ran out in 3 days. i already paid for sa again, so we should continue to see more new users when that kicks in. probably next week when they get around to activating our banner.
those were a cool couple months though. investing in advertising for a site that doesn't really pay for itself is just difficult to justify all the time. it's still worth it though.
thanks for everyone's contributions. =)
