I like MySQL personally, have dabbled a little in Postgresql, both are excellent.

Installing MySQL
MySQL Tutorial

Go to the source:
MySQL.com
Postgresql.org

Don't forget Google.com searches:
Google: mysql tutorial
Google: postgresql tutorial

I guess I should probably create a MySQL tutorial here on CN...but with all the great resources available, methinks it would be overkill.

I haven't tried MySQL, so I can't give it a fair shake, but I learned databases with Postgresql, and I have nothing but praise for it. It can do all the neat tricks such as transactions that you'll want to do at a higher level, while giving you access to several procedural languages (a PL/SQL clone, Perl, Python, C). The only problem I've ever had was getting it to work on Windows via Cygwin (which I have gotten to work, it's just that Cygwin changed the way it does RPC, so some stuff has broken). On Unix, it's been solid as a rock. And the documentation is easy to read/understand.

Yeah, I really need to get started with postgresql again; I did notice there are some W32 beta releases, I don't know if that means it can run under Cygwin or if it's a standalone W32 server. Not that it matters, I'd be running it under linux / bsd anyway, just curious.

My host (vilitas.com) happens to offer both MySQL & Postgresql with the standard package.

As far as I know, it's only under cygwin. And it's a download option with the standard setup, so it's a breeze (with the exception of that RPC thing).
