Want to learn how to program

Hi guys/girls I i'm interested in programing but i dont know where to start there are so many to choose from. i'm using red hat 9

What kind of programs do you initially want to make? Be realistic; games at this point are not.

starting with web programming would probably be the best way to get your feet wet.

learn a little HTML, then move on to PHP or ASP.

well I was thinking for making a cdplayer (cli and gui) or a file manger like midnight commander(cli).

Start with Visual Basic after you learn html at least. C+ wouldn't hurt either.

My advice Just dive right on into c++ or java its prolly best to learn an oop language since it does contain procedural concepts. and I wouldn't suggest trying to build a gui until you have a good concept of programing cli.

java might be better since it does contain the libraries for simple drawing. I personally prefer c++ but java is probably better as a learning language.

Try assembly, its fun and gives you lots of control! (14 byte programs! w00t!)

I think i'm just going to jump into c++. I have a c++ book from sams and the example look like there for windows. Would they still work?? and if it does how do I compile and run it?? i'm a linux newbie
