How often did we see would-be programmers asking for help to get started?
So here is my idea:
Why don't we add a "sticky" or something with links to free tools for beginners so they can start downloading, installing, learning, etc.
A Perl guy (or lady) can post links to free perl tools.
A PHP guy can post links to free PHP tools.
Etc.

Example:
C++
Here is a link to get DevC++: CLICK HERE to BLoodshed's DevC++
Here is the link to get Insight Debugger: CLICK HERE for visual debugger from Insight.

Something like this. A no nonsens link to get started for C++.

how about we add a 'Tools & Resources' link to the main navigation.

there will be the same categories that we have tutorials for.

for each category, we can have:

official site link - ( if applicable ) & summary of the origins of the language.
hello world download on every category
- other source code downloads
list of codenewbie tutorials
link to create tutorial
links to other resources ( link / description )

i could give specific users moderation over the page that they have expertise in.

i would have to program this .. it shouldn't be that difficult.

Yes, something like "Tools and Resources".

I think the head admin should be responsible for the "usability" of such a page on a general level. Or else it might become a "Resources link" that many others have wich often ended up as an incomprehensible pile of links, pop-ups and ads.

"We" are lucky and can start fresh .

(hey .. we are talking about free tools .. which means : it costs no money ... and i am dutch .. so .. big surprise eh .. not ? hmm ok .. )
