Star Wars Galaxies
Ok, so I'm cruising through the Best Buy today, and come across this new game Star Wars Galaxies, something like a Star Wars based RPG. Looks interesting, saw an ad or something a couple months ago, so I pick it up. The game is $50. and then on top of that, they expect you to pay an additional $14.99 a month (or a slightly reduced fee for 3 months, 6 months, etc) for the ability to play the game online. It's an online game, so supposedly it can't be played as a standalone, therefore you either shell out the money each month or you have a useless $50. game. WTF is this crap?!?!?
Please join me in my boycott to Star Wars Galaxies, and my general distemper towards Sony and Lucas Arts for putting out something this heinous.

i know a few people playing it .. they seem to like it .. just nother everquest with a starwars theme.
from what i hear, it's not that great. you work hard to capture a planet .. and then by the next time you log in, your planet has been captured by another group.
no 1st hand experience though.
i wont' be purchasing it anyway.

Buyer beware.
They aren't exactly hiding the fact it's an online game. It's been hyped as Star Wars meets Everquest. Should have taken a closer look at the game.
I'm not planning on buying it because my ability to play on online games is limited at the moment by my internet connection, plus I really hate the direction in which the SW universe is going. The last SW game I really enjoyed was TIE Fighter.

"Planetside" is another mmorpg. The fees are about the same each months. So is the price of the CD.
I know a few ppl who absolutely like it.
But here in the Netherlands only 4% of the pupulation uses a credit card. Half of them can't afford it actually (debt). So these kind of games won't be popular here anyway.
I don't know if these kind of games shoud be boycotted because I have no insights in the financial aspects behind the screens.
Nevertheless I understand where you're coming from. My initial reaction was too like "omg, not neat".

Ok, so maybe a boycott is a little overboard.
At the time I was a little PO'ed that someone is trying to get away with this; I've played other online games for years without having to pay, and those games you could play as standalone on your own system. If I could serve SWG on my own linux box or something, then it might be worth it to me.

This isn't the first game like this. Everquest, Ultima Online, Earth and Beyond, all are "Buy the game and get a subscription". It's not new.
Understand that these games are designed to hold many hundreds, even thousands of players at once. I'm not sure your hardware could hold the game universe, and certainly you wouldn't be able to handle the network load. They maintain the state of your character when you're offline, as well as tens of thousands of others. The first M in MMORPG is for Massive. You're paying the fees to maintain that system.

i remember beta testing asherons call 2 .. it sucked when they made changes and you ended up losing your characters that you spent time building up.
i don't think swg does that though.

Insightful comments; unfortunately, I've been out of the loop for sometime with regards to online gaming trends, so this really threw me. Plus I think $15. a month is excessive. Make it $3. a month and I'd do it.

Most games include the first month free with the purchase of the game. Sorta takes the punch out of paying upfront for the game. At least thats how Earth and Beyond worked.
