it's time for a new *nix distro

ok .. so out with the old, in with the new .. it's time to pusue the endless road of learning about linux.

i want install a new distro . . i've gotten familiar with debian and redhat .. what next?

i want to be able to use it as a desktop (xwindows) and will primarily experiment with web/ftp/mailserver apps.

be biased .. don't be ... just toss out the reasons with the distro suggestions.

thanks!

SuSE - because it's loaded with alot of software and basically good all around linux distro that dominates the EURO market

FreeBSD - because it's not linux, closer to real BSD UNIX.

Of course, that's unless you come to your senses and realize that Debian rules all. :p

I'd say Gentoo its my favorite at the moment. It will teach you quite a bit about linux and how it works the only other distro that could teach you more would be LFS which is quite difficult. Poratage is one of the best package management systems out there. The only drawback is that everything is compiled from source so it takes a while to install and get a running system but it is well worth it in my opinion.

Hey sde,

I would suggest either slackware or gentoo for "linux" as they are 'hardcore' and subject you to learning linux fully (gentoo I believe more so than slackware)

However, I would also recommend FreeBSD, the pkg'ing system is _excellent_ and, like bdl said, it's closer to Berkley Unix (or is it AT&T?) than any other OS.

HTH

freeBSD is a variant of BSD, which is Berkely Standard Distrobution i think...

anyways, berkely was givin or licensed the original AT&T unix source and developed that.

and i dont know how correct all of this is... i kinda remember it from my 2nd year unix class at uni
