Unhappy Direct X problem...

I'm not exactly sure this is the right place to post this thread, but I've been having trouble upgrading from Direct X 8 to Direct X 9.0 on my Windows XP machine.

It says it's unable to find a specific string in a direct X 8 CAB file. I've tried reinstalling windows, and I've tried three different packages for the install. A web distribution from Microsoft's site, a redist package from Microsoft's site, and a DX9.0 installer found on the Enter The Matrix game CD.

The people at tech support told me to low level format my HDD and reinstall everything.

Followup:
I guess I should have posted this under the Windows form, but any help is still very appreciated.

I have had this same problem goung from 7.0 to 8. Pull out some old game and have it overwrite DirectX 8 to like 5 or 6. Then Install 9 and you should be ok.

P.S.: Why do you need it? I thought there were no games that required it yet

Ah hah.

Enter The Matrix requires Direct X 9.

I've actually found a solution.
This occurred by me accidentally stumbling upon the install log.
I went through and found the name of the missing file.
Then I installed the Direct X 9.0 SDK and found the corresponding file and placed it in the directory it was looking for.

Wa hoo!

I'm on level 3 with Ghost right now.
