pressing the button halfway would help for a non-moving object .. but when its moving .. then it wont work
(try to make a picture of your kitten when she is climbing your open stairs and hanging underneath it more often than standing on the stairs )
(try to make a picture of your little baby when he/she is standing up for the first time (this might be nonmoving a bit longer .. but might still be too slow .. totally depends on your baby )

the timing on the to pic is great ... when i try to make such a picture like that i have to press the button a little less than 1 second before he will be in that position for real.
thats what i find anoying about my camera (sony spc5 (i think))

i think the trick is to hold the button down half-way for a second.. that gets the camera ready, .. then it is instant .. that is pretty standard among most digital cameras

Follow up and thanks
Hey, everybody, I finally made a decision.
Before I announce the winner I would like to start by thanking everyone for all their comments and information I read everyone of them and most were pretty useful so it's pat yourself on the back time.
Ok but enough is enough, there can be only one, envelope please.
We know it's going to be a Canon but which is it, the G3 and it's fully manual options or the s400 for it's sleeker design and cheaper price?
The G3! The G3 wins it and becomes saline's first digital camera, congradulations to the G3.
Ok enough of that. Why did I buy this one. Well because I wanted this one more. Oh and because ALL DIGITAL CAMERAS ARE ON SALE AT AMAZON.COM RIGHT NOW!
I got over $100 off which completely eliminated my reason to not buy the G3.
So as of tommorow the G3 is being whisked on its way to my door step where it will be used to gross extent and I'm sure people here will see a little bit o' the saline photo magic.
Thanks again everybody.

congradulations to the G3.

Congratulations to the G3! and Congratulations to Saline!
hehe, .. i point this out because i thought i was the only one who got the spelling of congratulations morphed with graduation .. which is where the d comes from in saline's "congradulations" .
i spent a few minutes with a friend trying to determine why i spell that word wrong .. and that is the conclusion we came up with

I want to see some sample shots too, 5-7 days from now I'll see if I can't upload some, it'll probably be just shots of my dirty dirty room or something.
