Depends on what distro you run, you might be able to find a java JRE package to install. Otherwise, you can download and install the JRE from java.sun.com and link the plugin to your browser's plugin directory.

Well, one of the main reasons linux is so popular is it's 'do it yourself' approach. You don't like to be spoonfed the way MS does things? Create your own operating system around the linux kernel. Unfortunately, this is also the reason there are so many linux converts such as yourself that have problems with hardware issues, things they never had to deal with before; it was all done for them. There are linux distros such as Mandrake or SuSE that will do a good job in completely setting up your system in a more-or-less Windows fashion (i.e. they hide it from you, they just make things work). Other distros such as Slackware or Debian make you do all the work configuring the system and setting up hardware.

At any rate, if you can post a little more information (and might not be a bad idea to start a new thread) about what kind of sound card, which linux distro you use, that sort of thing; I'm sure we can point you in the right direction.
