Realtek ethernet pci card

i have a pc with a sis ethernet card onboard, i cant seem to make this work (an older version does work, but not with this new pc)

so i decided to use the pci slot for my old realtek network card

i am using redhat 8 (kernel 2.4.18-14)

in the directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/net i can find
8390.o
ne2k-pic.o

imo these should be the drivers i need ?

when i insmod 8390.o its ok
when i then insmod ne2k-pci it fails and tells me that it tries to use irq0 ??

(in win98se on the same machine the realtek pci card uses irq5 (i/o 1040-105F))

i disabled the onboard sis card .. but when i boot my redhat it still sees it and tells me that it will delay the ethernet initialization

can anyoe help me with this ?

i disabled the sis ethernet card in the bios ... tried for quite some time to make it work .. but failed

i decided to put the network card from my old pc in my new pc.

this 'old' card is a realtek rtl8029(AS) pci ethernet nic
it works fine under win98se ... using irq5 and i/o 1040-105F

when i boot under linux (rh8, kernel 2.4.18-14) i get the following :
Quote:
localhost ifup: sis900 device does not seem to be present, delaying eht0 initilization

localhost network: bringing up interfact eth0: failed
those 2 lines are directly underneath eachother in /var/log/boot.log

in /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/net i have (among others) 2 files :
8390.o
ne2k-pci.o

i can successfully insmod 8390
when i then do : insmod me2k-pci
then i get :
pci: no irq known for interrupt pin A of device 00:0e.0
eth0: realtek rtl-8029 found at 0x8400, irq 0, oo:c0:f0:53:18:05

both in /proc/ioports and in /proc/pci the realtek card shows up
on another page i read something about /proc/interrupts but i dont have that file

in the bios i tried both setting the irq of pci1 as well as the irq of pci2 to a fixed value (tried 5 and 7) and both tried to set them to 'auto' as well

i am doing this on an asus barebone system (terminator p4) pc

i'll have a look if i can find the exact specifications of the sis ethernet chipset

ok .. in the bios i just enabled (again):
'onboard lan'
'pci 2.1 support'

i also see a setting 'interrupt mode' which i can set to 'pic' or 'apic' (its set to 'apic' right now) i dont know what that does do

when i then go to windows i find :
sis900-based pci fast ethernet adapter
hardware version 145
irq3
memory : 0fc00000-ofc00fff
i/o : 1400-14ff

when i look at the chip on my mainboard then i see :
realteak
rtl8201bl
2508001
2200 taiwan

(i think this is the onboard sis900 ethernet controller..which seems to be a realtek as well )

the old ethernet card i also put in (in a pci slot) is also a realtek (so i have 2 realtek ethernet controllers in it now (1 onboard, 1 pci))
the chip on the one in the pci slot has :
realtek
rtl8029as
0136691
663c taiwan
(it has knc30bt on top of the green background)

i only need 1 ethernet card ... so either the sis900 (realtek8201) or the realtek8029 ... but so far i am unable to make any of them work

a colleague of me has an older version of this barebone system .. also with a sis900 ethernet card .. and he had no problems at all setting it up .. i used the same cd's of rh7 as he ... when i was on vacation he also tried it and installed the rh8 i have on it right now

does anyone have any idea ? please ?

it doesnt have to be the solution, just a direction where i should be looking at .. or even a path of thoughts i could try to follow ...

at work i really need to get on the network under linux ... i have 2 network cards (1 onboard and 1 pci) .. but the noob which i am cant seem to make any of them work properly
