I just emerged (gentoo for install) the latest version of samba 2.2.8, versions below this should NOT be used due to security reasons.
There is an entire tutorial distributed with the installation, which really should clear things up for you.
I have done a fair bit of linux admin work, and have everything on my box authenticating to an LDAP service, samba can do this, but doesnt have to.
Basically, check out the documentation that came with your distrobution, if all else fails download the source from
http://www.samba.org , decompress it, then look for the html docs.
