Stupid question

When you look at the code of linux system files (ex: grub), why is 90% of the code made up of junk characters like @, !, etc. Is it some kind of encryption? Or is it just a buffer?

ummm...

What are you looking at the code in? If you just open something thats compiled in a text editor it won't look right, you have to open the .c or .cpp file in the appropriate venue.

Then again you may already know that and, if so, I'm just as clueless as you are.

It's because probably it can't be identified as a normal text file and the binary is interpreted into characters like that, check out strip, it's great for binaries, speeds em up and lowers their size 8)
