MySQL problems
a friend of mine and myself share a server that we have co-located in l.a.
last week, we shipped the admins there some ram to upgrade the box.
every since they did the upgrade, mysql hasn't worked. in a "ps aux", it shows that mysqld is running. when i do a [SHELL]# /etc/init.d/mysqld restart[/SHELL] it will always "fail" the shutdown, but it will say "ok" for the start.
another thing that doesn't work since those guys changed the ram is "ntsysv". after i re-binded the /usr/sbin to the path, i can get it loaded, but it does not show, or retain the settings i make for the services to start. it is almost like it has nothing to do with what services are starting/stopping... i know this because "httpd" is not checked, but it does start on boot.
the mysql problem is the biggest though. i've removed all apache/mysql/php rpms and re-installed them all together, but i am still getting the same problem.
an "namp localhost" shows that port 3306 is open.
the error logs say that port 3306 is in use when i try to restart it. but even when i kill -9 all pids for mysql, it starts and says it's ok, but i get the same results.
any ideas?

As crazy as it sounds, I would have the techs pull the new RAM out and see if the problems continue. Bad RAM can rreally make a machine do weird things, and it was the only thing you changed recently, like in programming, when a problem crops up check your latest change, and go from there.

i agree, bad ram makes things really screwy. Did you get any errors when you removed the rpm's, something like "dir not empty, not removing" maybe something is being left behind.

the 'techs' , .. as i use that term loosely, .. did take the ram out after it did not work. we are in the process of sending more ram.
i removed every single mysql/php package. when i re-installed them, i would have got an error saying that the package was already installed.
also, i tried to start mysqld after i un-installed, and it definately wasn't there. i ran a ps aux to make sure nothing was left running.
i'm baffled, .. but i'm in sandiego now, so nothing matters till i come back tomarrow =)

Well at this point I would reinstall Apache, check to see that it is working. Then reinstall mySQL check it, then php and check it. You do too much at one time it gets hard to tell where the real problem is, especially with programs that are as intertwined as those three.
Good Luck keep us posted.

thanks. the problem is definately with mysql alone.. and on redhat, it works better if you install php and mysql alone.
mysql doesn't have to work in a web based environment, so it should at least work by itself.. i mean mysql server and mysql client... but the mysql client won't even connect to the server when it says it is running.
very strange indeed. if the box were at my house, i'd just re-install redhat... or even better, .. debian.
