Getting X to work in Debian

So I've installed woody , and from what I can see it looks to be a capible, quality os. But the one glaring problem I still have is that i can't seem to get X to work. I apt-got kde and configured it in hopes that would correct it, but it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

(besides running XF86Config )

Here it is, in it's arcane entireity:

Code:
/usr/X11R6/lib/xinit/xserver rc: exec: /usr/bin/X11R6: cannot execute connection refused, unable to connect to xserver no such process errno 3 $Display is not set

I assume the problem detailed in the last line is the culprit, but i would ask for your enlightened advice on how to fix this.
thank you,

Hmm... I can't remember the package name for X. Perhaps it's xfree86-common. If not, try this:

apt-cache search xfree86 | less

Well, i got it installed, configured, and on the bleeding edge of working. There's just this 1 message that comes up right after it kills itself upon startup:
Code:
Addscreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0
sooo close...

I've never run into this one before; what type of graphics card is it?

About the only thing I could find on Google with any sort of valid advice was this:

http://www.libranetlinux.com/librane.../msg00201.html

This basically outlines that you have no /dev/agpgart device in order for X to connect with, and must create the device node. I'd be surprised if the install you did neglected to leave this device file out, but you never know.

I always configure X like this:
[SHELL]
prompt# XFree86 -configure
[/SHELL]

(let X autoprobe your devices)
Add some modelines to the output file (/root/XF86Config.new) and test it with

[SHELL]
prompt# XFree86 -xf86config XF86config.new
[/SHELL]

Ok lets try this again. Attachment should work now.

Hope this is in any way of use to you or anyone else for that matter. As it's configured, I'm using the standard 'nv' driver vs. the nVidia drivers, and '/dev/mouse' is a link to '/dev/gpmdata' which in turn uses my USB mouse under '/dev/input/mice'. I've got an MS Explorer 3.0 USB Optical mouse, works great.
