Knoppix DSL help

I have been trying to figure out how to setup my dsl with Knoppix; because I am a newbie so I am about to go "NUTSO". I did the ipconfig/all on the Windows side and it gave me some this infomation.
Host Name:xxxx
primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: Yes
WINS Proxy enabled:Yes

Controller:
Physical add:xxx-xxx
DHCP ENabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled: yes
IP Add:xxx.xx.x.xx
subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway: 172.xx.x.254
DHCP Server:172.xx.x.254
DNS Servers: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
xxx.xx.xxx.xxx

I did a netstat on the knoppix side and it brought up some things that said connected.
I did a route but , I don't truly understand how to do this in the "Root" ; all I typed was route and it brought up something with addresses.

I have the linux book 4th edition would this help me on setting up my DSL for linux..

Note: I also did it this time with "dhcp" but, I don't know if I'm following the steps right because I still click on the "Google" icon and it still won't connect me to what ever address I put in.

I tried also to do ping my "IP Address number" and this worked but when I put in ping goggle.com or even ping www.google.com nothing happend.

Did you try pinging just IPs? Also, can you ping the border router ( The IP after your External IP. It will have the same subnet)? Are you authenticating correctly? You might have someone see if they can ping your external IP. One other thing, what are you using to make your PPPoE connection?

a few quick pointers:
Code:
~ > ifconfig -a
shows what info every network interfaces has in your machine, I'd look for eth0 or ppp0 or similar
If the first command gives no info on eth0 or equivalent, then it's the configuration of the ethernet card that isn't correct, a simple
Code:
 ~ > ifup eth0
could be what is keeping you away, else it's upto you to configure your interface, I have no knowledge of what tools knopix provides, simply because I dont use it and never has, but it's a distro which should automaticaly check and configure everything at bootup, so theres not much to it, as far as I recall.
Code:
~ > cat /etc/resolv.conf
will show if the DNS servers has been set correct.

Code:
~ > ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
has helped alot of people, I'd start with the IP's given from your windows info, first default gateway, if that fails you're dead, else DHCP-server, if that fails you can't renew your current IP, and you migh be OK for now, then DNS1 then DNS2, if they fail you can't resolve internet names like
Quote:
~> host ibm.com
ibm.com has address 129.42.16.99
which tells your machine what IP the human readable name has, so it knows where to contact.

If they all are OK, the I'll try with
Code:
~ > traceroute <some ip or domain>
that'll show where in your current apparently "live" connection it fails. It might be your ISP accesspoint or the domain your trying to contact that simply isn't responding.

I finally figured it out with my engineer buddy how to get it to connect. But now every time I get out of Knoppix ; I will have to input all my internet information in again. So what is the cause of this?

You running Knoppix directly from the CD? Unless there's some save-to-floppy option, that's why you lose the info.
