sick server
i went away for a few days and came home to a server crash. i don't know what happened, but everytime i reboot or try to start it now, i get the error below. i tried mounting like it says, but it didn't work. any ideas on what i can do to fix it?

Did you realy try what it says?
enter the root passwd, you'll be given a prompt, then enter: fsck /dev/hda2
it will most likely come with alot of "blah moved to blah" errors, and possebli a few "press y to make it happen" Just do so, and let it finish its run, type: exit and it will reboot, this time there should be no errors.
Might I suggest you switch to ext3, so the fsck might be a tad easier on the system.

the only thing i tried before was mounting the drive, .. not fsck.

Thats odd, did you make a valid restart, ie restart or shutdown -h now -r
And did it do everything correct during shutdown? with killing all processes, and unmounting filesystem corret.
You sure its not on an entirely different partition the errors are appearing at at this point?

yeah, in debian it is "reboot -n" for now, ..
my system is completely jacked up .. in gnome, when i click on a terminal , it opens and shutsdown a few times before i can open one that sticks.
i'm running a half-life game server. i run it in a screen. when i try to access the screen i get errors.
i think it's time for a new flavor... this version seems jacked up.

# find . -type d | xargs chmod 700
??
Or anyother mode you want to assign to all the directories found from current path.

that cleared some of them, but other's are still read-only... i can't even delete those left-over files.
i have given up .. the debian gods have frowned on me and i'm going back to rh7.2 tonight.

after trying to install redhat 7.2 and 7.3 over 30 times in the last 2 days, i am beginning to become convinced that i have a hardware problem. i've tried different hard drives, so i suppose the next thing to change out is the ram.
i've installed redhat 7.2 on this exact same setup a few times before i started having this problem. i also tried installing freebsd last night, but it seems there was a problem downloading the packages from their site after the install started.
tonight will be the third night of install-fest 2002 .. wish me luck

thanks a lot for all the help .. after all this it seems as thought he motherboard is not working correctly .. i came to this conclusion after the monitor would not work after trying 2 different video cards and 2 different monitors, and 2 different hard drives.
maybe a power surge , , i dunno =/
