colors in cl / debian

i'm running debian. on redhat, colored directories and files based on permissions is standard.

on debian, everything is white. i did notice today that when i login as root, then su to a user, i see the colored directories and files.

how can i set regular users to see the colored files?

modify .bash_profile

add:

alias ls='ls --color'
