Applications for a small Linux server for a small business....

I have a little Dell PowerEdge 400SC running RedHat 9.0. We plan on using the machine to backup the webserver on a nightly basis along with serving up Windows files (Samba) and be a caching proxy server (Squid). I was wondering what else we could use it for in the small office?

DHCP/Firewall is currently handled by their router. DNS is provided by the ISP. So those are covered.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I want to make sure we use the machine to it's fullest potential.

Mail Server? If your company uses different e-mail accounts, you could set it up to hit each in turn, grab all the mail and cache it.

Oh, and you might look into LDAP applications. Unless you're running a domain through Samba, I don't see any immediate uses for it, but it's a cool technology if you can find uses for it.

Mail is all running off the webserver. So that should be OK.

Good idea on the LDAP, I will look into that one.

Anyone else?

NTP is another service you could run.

What the world really needs is a way to have a local copy of Microsoft Update run off a Linux box.
