installing new kernel

Hello,
can anyone give me a link to some decent HOWTO install new kernel in linux?
I have 2,4,X but i want to try 2.6.X
since i think i have problems with my SIS chipset and AGP3.0 support right now.

Thanks in advance.
Peter

Apparently the old standby Kernel-HOWTO is in the process of getting a facelift. For the time being, there is a temporary 'work in progress' document that should suffice:

This process is one PITA. If you feel up to spending some time go for it. There is so much that needs to be changed it's almost a waste of time.

As for the AGP issue, have you checked into the compatibility? You might check the changelogs for 2.6.x and see if anything had been changed for any SiS chipsets. Also, did you try the try_agp_unsupported option for agpgart?
