FTP without Shell Access ( debian )

I have to issue shell access ( /bin/bash ) in the passwd file for the user to be able to ftp into their account.

is there a way around this?

I tried a while ago to figure out te same thing, only with SFTP. I eventually gave up. But if you're interested in FTP, you should be able to do it with a dedicated FTP server, like ProFTPd or something. I'd look into that and see if it does what you need it to.

i should have mentioned that. i am using proftpd. =/ i thought i could point the user's shell to /dev/null or something, but it seems to have to be a valid shell.

/bin/false is what i was trying before too. /bin/nologin doesn't exist. just keeps giving invalid login error.
